Beegu by Alexis Deacon was published in 2004 by Random House Children’s Publishers. When Beegu’s ship sank into the water, she is lost. She travels around looking for help but no one understands her. She even tried asking the leaves for help but they just flew away. She then thinks she hears her mom calling form far away but it was only a telephone booth. Sad and lonely Beegu wanted to find some friends. She tried many times to find a place where she could fit in, a box of puppies, jumping rope with some kids. She got excited when some friends ran up to her but they only wanted to say goodbye. Once again she thought she heard her mom calling from far away but she knew it couldn’t be…but then it was. Reunited with her mom at last she told her all about her adventure on earth, explaining that the big creatures were unfriendly but some small ones were nice and she would never forget those small creature and hoped they would never forget her either.
This is a loving tale about a lost, lonely, friendly creature who just wants to find some friends. It is a heartwarming story that teaches the importance of welcoming and being kind to others, even if they are different. I would recommend this story to all ages.
